Mulan (Ming-Na) scheint in das von ihren Eltern vorbestimmte Leben einfach nicht zu passen. Als ihr Vater (Soon-Tek Oh) aber zum Militär einberufen wird, um China gegen die Hunnen zu verteidigen, schleicht sie sich nachts aus dem Elternhaus, verkleidet sich als Mann, da Frauen in der Armee des Chinesischen Kaisers streng verboten sind, und tritt statt ihrem Vater der Armee bei.
Die Geister der Ahnen ihrer Familie senden der tapferen Mulan Hilfe und Beistand – eine Rolle, die der kleine Drache Mushu (Eddie Murphy) übernimmt, der Mulan mehr als einmal vor einer Katastrophe bewahrt und sie dafür in andere bringt.
Im Kampf gegen die Feinde Chinas muss Mulan ihren Mut, ihre Stärke und ihren Verstand einsetzen – und verliebt sich dabei in ihren Vorgesetzten Li Shang (B.D. Wong). Doch die Hunnen sind stärker, als das chinesische Heer angenommen hat, und zahlenmäßig weit überlegen.
Kritik:
Immer pünktlich zum Weihnachtsgeschäft bringt Disney bei uns jedes Jahr einen neuen Zeichentrickfilm in die Kinos – zusammen mit der passenden Werbekampagne auch gleichzeitig in fast alle Einkaufsläden, die man sich vorstellen kann.
Mit Pocahontas [1995] fuhren die Mäusezeichner ihren ersten kolossalen Kritiker-Flop ein, nachdem die Zuschauer Jahre lang mit Filmen wie Arielle, die Meerjungfrau [1989], Die Schöne und das Biest [1991] und Der König der Löwen [1994] zufrieden waren. Doch sehr wahrscheinlich lag es auch daran, dass die Filme nicht mehr dann produziert wurden, wenn gute Ideen vorlagen, sondern die Arbeit der Zeichner zu einer Fließbandarbeit geworden war.
Nachdem Pocahontas einen dermaßenen Image-Verlust bedeutete, überrascht es, dass Disney in Mulan erneut auf die Geschichte einer jungen Frau zurückgreift, um die Kassen zu füllen. Tatsächlich gelang es ihnen mit der frechen Soldatin sogar, an den Kinokassen fast das Doppelte der Herstellungskosten wieder einzuspielen.
Mich verwundert das: von dem Esprit, dem Charme und den Einfällen der "originalen" Klassiker, Das Dschungelbuch [1967], Arielle, Die Schöne und das Biest und sogar Der König der Löwen ist in Mulan nicht viel übrig geblieben. Der Zeichenstil, den Disney seit Pocahontas immer der Geschichte anzupassen versucht, gleicht in Mulan dem von Hercules [1997] verblüffend, insbesondere die Zeichnungen der Pferde sehen wie ein Überbleibsel des letzten Films aus. Doch das alles ist kein Vorteil.
Von den rundlichen, warmen und dezent farbenfrohen Zeichnungen der älteren Filme ist inzwischen nichts übrig geblieben. Stattdessen hält der Computer Einzug, wo man sich das nur vorstellen kann. Diejenigen Szenen, die in Mulan nicht mit dem Computer generiert oder unterstützt wurden, lassen sich an einer Hand abzählen. Doch statt diese CGI-Szenen wie in Taran und der Zauberkessel [1985] oder Die Schöne und das Biest zur Unterstützung einzusetzen, so dass man als Zuschauer den Unterschied nicht bemerken würde, ist die Pixelpracht in den folgenden Filmen, und damit auch in Mulan viel zu offensichtlich, als dass man das Gezeigte noch genießen könnte.
Der Grund für die Offensichtlichkeit liegt vor allem in der Bewegungsart: während gezeichnete Gegenstände sich immer etwas ruckelnd, stockelnd und einfach nicht perfekt flüssig bewegen (was auf Grund der handgezeichneten Bewegung gar nicht anders möglich ist), sind diese "Unreinheiten", die den Charme der Charaktere ausmachen, bei computergenerierten Bildern einfach nicht vorhanden. Man kann bei einem künstlichen Bild keine "Fehler" einbauen, und so sieht man eben ganz deutlich den Unterschied zwischen einer makellosen, flüssigen Bewegung und einer handgezeichneten Person, die sich sichtlich "unbeholfener" bewegt.
Für mich nimmt das so gut wie jeden Charme aus dem Film, zumal die Macher sich um dieses Thema offenbar keine Gedanken machen. Sicher wird die Arbeit mit Hilfe von computergenerierten Bildern deutlich einfacher, schneller und billiger – aber genau das merke ich als Zuschauer. Ich sehe, dass die Zeichner nicht mehr so viel Liebe und Zeit auf die einzelnen Bilder verwenden.
Und genau hier liegt das Problem bei Mulan. Statt das Beste beider Welten zu vereinen, wie jüngst Lilo & Stitch [2002] es tat, bei dem man den Computer so gut wie nie gesehen hat, ist Mulan mehr ein Technik-Film, als ein Zeichentrickabenteuer.
Wobei man mich aber nicht falsch verstehen sollte: Reine Computer-Animationsfilme wie Toy Story [1995] oder Die Monster AG [2001] haben nicht nur ihren ganz besonderen Charme, sondern können trotz Pixeln und Bytes eine Wärme und Vertrautheit widerspiegeln, mit der ich mich als Zuschauer identifizieren kann. Allerdings wirken dort die Computergrafiken "natürlich" und "wie aus einem Guss"; Dagegen haben für mich in einem "richtigen" Zeichentrickfilm offensichtliche Computer-Grafiken nichts zu suchen!
Selbst das Abenteuer kann in Mulan nicht überzeugen.
Das Drehbuch wurde von unzähligen Autoren zusammengeschustert – was man an den episodenhaften Abschnitten des Films sieht. Zu Beginn wird oft gesehener Klamauk großgeschrieben; erst später, nachdem die Helden in einer völlig verwüsteten Stadt ankommen, zeigt Mulan, dass die Story durchaus mehr zu bieten hat. Die zweite Hälfte des Films erinnert viel eher an Pocahontas, als andere Disney-Filme seither, und ist bedeutend düsterer geraten.
Die Charaktere sind alles andere als ausgefeilt, die Story trotz der Freigabe nicht kindgerecht (keine Kriegsgeschichte ist das), und dennoch sehr einfach gehalten. Für etwas ältere Zuschauer erschließt sich der gesamte Inhalt schon von Anfang an, Überraschungen bleiben bis auf die von Mushu eingefädelten Patzer völlig aus.
Eddie Murphy leiht im Original dem kleinen Drachen seine Stimme – und hebt damit den Film über den Durchschnitt hinaus. Ming-Na kann zwar ebenfalls überzeugen, steht allerdings weit hinter dem Sympathiefaktor des Drachen zurück. Der kleine Helfer ist auch der wahre Held des Films, er gewinnt die Herzen der Zuschauer, er sorgt für Witz und Spannung auf dem Bildschirm. Alle anderen wirken da wie Staffage.
Handwerklich bietet der Film bis auf die offensichtlichen Computerbilder Hausmannskost, interessante oder ungewöhnliche Kamerafahrten oder -einstellungen sucht man vergebens.
Die Musik von Jerry Goldsmith ist wie für den Altmeister typisch, sehr rhythmisch und gut gelungen, einzig die völlig überflüssigen Songs passen nicht zum Gezeigten. Der orchestrale Score dagegen ist ein echter Hinhörer und funktioniert mit Sicherheit auch außerhalb des Films.
Natürlich haben die Macher viele kleine Anspielungen in den Film miteinfließen lassen, so haben die Flecken auf einem Pferd im Film die Form der Mickey-Maus-Ohren, oder eine Bewegung, mit der Mulan Shan-Yu entwaffnet ist eine echte und funktionierende Kampfbewegung aus Fernost.
Doch all das hilft nicht, den Film höher zu bewerten – man sieht Mulan sehr deutlich an, dass er unter Zeitdruck und nur des Profits wegen in dieser Form herausgebracht wurde.
Wie man Mulan auf Deutsch überleben kann, verstehe ich nicht ganz – die Synchronisation ist mit einem Wort: Grauenhaft. Besonders Otto Waalkes spricht den witzigen Drachen Mushu mit einer Lustlosigkeit, die schon vorsätzlich erscheint. Im Original ist Eddie Murphys Stimme eines der wenigen Highlights des Films.
Die ansich langweilige erste Hälfte des Films, und die aufgesetzten Songs, die bis auf einen nicht wirklich mitreißen können, zeigen, dass Disney sich mehr als nur ein Jahr Zeit lassen sollte, bis der nächste Fließband-Zeichentrickfilm in die Kinos kommt. In diesem Tempo erreicht man nie wieder die Qualität der wirklichen Klassiker.
Fazit:Der Film selbst wirkt uneinheitlich, episodenhaft und vor allem sind die ersten 40 Minuten des Films sehr "mäßig" erzählt. Die zweite Hälfte ist nicht nur deutlich ernster, sondern auch besser; ein Nebenprodukt, wenn mehr als ein halbes Duzend Drehbuchautoren beteiligt sind.
Für Fans sicherlich das Einschalten wert und für Kinder möglicherweise unterhaltsam, doch mit den wahren Klassikern von vor 10 Jahren kann Mulan in keiner Sekunde mithalten – trotz der tollen Stimme von Eddie Murphy.
Nett anzusehen, stellenweise sogar wirklich spaßig, aber nur in der englischen Original-Fassung.
